Creation of a Regional Emergency Planning Model for Continuous Disaster Mitigation Response

The aim of this project is to use a test area (the Charlotte MSA) to create:

  • A documented process for regional response planning and action plans focused on continuous regional planning
  • Enhanced interagency communication
  • Continuous resource management prior to and during a disaster

The goal of this project is to create a regional emergency planning model designed to enhance multi-jurisdictional, interagency planning and to provide continuous disaster mitigation response that can be used in communities across the nation.
Impact: This project is having an immediate impact in the Charlotte Metropolitan Area, but will have a regional and national impact in the long-term.

On Friday, October 26th, 2007 Dr. Laura Myers of Western Carolina University conducted an Emergency Planning workshop on the grounds of the Charlotte Police and Fire Training Academy. The workshop was attended by over fifty participants, representing a wide spectrum of stakeholders including: regional law enforcement personnel, regional emergency planners and private-sector business contingency planners. The main purpose of the gathering was to begin to craft an emergency response plan, built by the regional stakeholders, which will eventually be turned over to DHS as a customizable template that can be adapted for individual and unique jurisdictions.
